The most frequently asked questions about garment steamers.
Steaming vs. ironing
What is the difference between a clothes steamer and an iron?
- Steaming: Easy and quick to use; point the unit at the fabric and let the steam do its work without additional equipment.
- Ironing: Requires an ironing board and constant movement to remove creases, which takes more preparation and time.
Steaming: Saves time; ideal for a quick refresher without setting up an ironing board.
Ironing: Requires more time and effort, with the need to prepare an ironing board and iron attentively.
Steaming: Gentle on delicate fabrics; reduces the risk of burning and damage, making it suitable for a wider range of materials.
Ironing: Can cause damage to sensitive fabrics from high temperatures, especially without proper settings.
Steaming: Suitable for fabrics such as silk, wool and synthetic materials that are sensitive to heat.
Ironing: Can damage delicate fabrics by direct heat, which is less ideal for these materials.
Steaming: Portable steamers are handy for a quick refresh of clothes on the go.
Ironing: Irons are less practical for travel due to their size and the need for an ironing board.
Steaming: Removes not only creases, but also odors and kills bacteria, making it versatile for both garment care and hygiene.
Ironing: Primarily focused on crease removal and less versatile in other applications.
Steaming: Compact and space-saving; easy to store without taking up much space.
Ironing: Requires an ironing board and more storage space, which is less space-saving.
Steaming: Effective in killing 99% of bacteria and allergens, contributing to more hygienic garment care.
Ironing: High temperatures can kill bacteria, but steam offers a more thorough disinfectant by penetrating deep into the fabric.

About clothing steaming
A handheld steamer is a compact and portable device that allows you to easily detangle and refresh about 1-2 garments, wherever and whenever you want. Ideal for small touch-ups and last-minute clothing care, a hand steamer is a handy companion on the go. It takes up little space and can be used quickly to remove wrinkles from your clothes, keeping you looking groomed even when you're in a hurry. Check out our hand steamers here and discover the convenience of effortlessly wrinkle-free clothes!
A vertical clothes steamer is a freestanding appliance that allows you to effortlessly treat entire baskets of clothes by de-cluttering and freshening them. Ideal for longer sessions, these steamers can be used for more than an hour at a time. With the higher power and larger water tank of these units, you can quickly and efficiently treat many garments in a row. The lightweight steam hose makes it comfortable and easy to steam your clothes without any effort. Check out our vertical clothes steamers here.
Just very briefly: You fill the water reservoir with tap water or distilled water and let the device heat up. Then you press the steam button on the handheld steamer (you don't have to do this with the vertical steamers) and place the steam head against the garment. With your free hand, pull the garment tight. Iron over the fabric with the steam head and the hot steam will remove all wrinkles and unpleasant odors!
- Clothes steamers replace irons for 100%
While clothes steamers are great for removing creases and freshening up clothes, they cannot create tight folds in formal garments like an iron can. Steaming is a perfect alternative for quick touch-ups and for those who hate ironing. - Steaming removes all stains
Clothes steamers are effective at refreshing clothes, but they are not designed to remove deep stains. Stubborn stains often need additional treatment. - Steaming replaces washing
Although steaming can remove odors and light stains, it does not replace the deeper cleaning that clothes need after multiple wearings. Use a steamer to remove light odors. - Dry cleaning is the same as dry cleaning
Dry cleaners offer deeper cleaning and remove stubborn stains using chemicals. A clothes steamer is designed to de-clutter and freshen clothes, not to remove stubborn, deep stains.
Other questions about steamers
We are sorry, but the short answer is unfortunately no. We tried extensively to design a cordless steamer, but unfortunately this proved not to be feasible. All STEAMRS garment steamers come with a power cord and thus must be plugged into a wall outlet. This is necessary because garment steamers are designed to heat up quickly, and the wattage required for this would make a battery pack impractically heavy.
No. Our garment steamers are designed to be used with tap or distilled water. We do not recommend adding perfumes or other additives, as they damage the components of your clothes steamer very much.
A layer of water remains under the water reservoir of upright steamers (our Professional Steamer and the MIDI Steamer). This does not mean that your steamer or the reservoir is leaking, this water is simply reabsorbed and used the next time the steamer is turned on. This layer of water remains so the steamer can never boil dry. This also helps to keep the steamer clean and reduce limescale. We specifically designed this this way and can do absolutely no harm! This way you can enjoy your appliance much longer.
- Make sure the clothes steamer is properly descaled regularly. Click here for garment steamer descaling instructions.
- Do you have a vertical steamer? Then make sure the steam hose has as few bends or kinks as possible. This will allow the steam to find its way without any problems. Do you have a handheld steamer? Then hold it upright for a good while during use, so that the water can be pumped through the device.
