Stoffen bank? Stoom om lokaal plekjes en geurtjes te verwijderen

A stain on the armrest, a faint odor after an evening on the sofa, or just a few wrinkles in the upholstery: you don’t have to call a dry cleaner or have the whole sofa cleaned right away. A garment steamer lets you quickly and directly tackle specific stains and odors.

Why steaming works on upholstered furniture

Hot steam penetrates deep into the fibers of fabric upholstery and breaks down odor particles that brushing alone leaves behind. At the same time, the heat kills up to 99% of bacteria without the need for chemical cleaning products. Because you use steam rather than a lot of water, the upholstery also dries much faster than after wet cleaning.

How to treat a spot

  1. Test on an inconspicuous area first, such as the underside of a cushion, to see how the fabric reacts.
  2. Steam the spot directly, from a few centimeters away, moving the steamer gently back and forth. Don’t linger too long in one spot.
  3. Brush gently afterward with a clothes brush to lift the fibers again and pick up any loose dirt.
  4. Let it dry thoroughly and ventilate the room, especially if you were dealing with an odor.

For loose cushions or a single armrest, a compact handheld steamer is ideal. If you’re steaming the whole sofa, you’ll work faster with a MIDI or Professional steamer, which has a larger water tank.

Please note: not for leather or suede

This method is intended for fabric (textile) upholstery. Steam can damage leather or suede, so use a specialized leather care product instead of a steamer.

Frequently asked questions

Can I steam my whole sofa, or just specific spots?

Either is fine. For a single stain or odor, spot steaming is enough. If you want to freshen up the whole sofa, work slowly in sections so you don’t miss a spot.

Does steaming also remove stubborn stains?

Steaming works very well on odors, light stains, and wrinkles in upholstery. For ingrained or stubborn stains (such as wine or ink), targeted stain removal is needed first; then steam to freshen up the fabric.

Is steaming safe for all sofa fabrics?

For almost all types of fabric, yes, except leather and suede. If in doubt, always test on an inconspicuous area first.

How long does it take for the sofa to dry?

Because you use steam instead of a lot of water, the upholstery is usually dry within an hour, depending on how long you steamed one spot and how well the room is ventilated.
