 — the complete Garment Steamer guide  Reading time: 5 minutes · Category: Steaming tips & guides

Your STEAMRS Garment Steamer has arrived. Great. Now for the fun part: learning how to steam.

Steaming is easier than you think, but a few things make the difference between "this works pretty well" and "this is the best purchase I've ever made!" In this guide, we'll take you through it step by step.

What's in the box?

Before you begin, check that you have all of the following:

✓ STEAMRS Garment Steamer
✓ Heat-resistant storage bag
✓ Measuring cup
✓ Manual

How to use the STEAMRS Garment Steamer: A complete guide

Step 1 — Fill the water reservoir

Use the included measuring cup to fill the reservoir with tap water or distilled water. The reservoir holds 100 ml — enough for 8 to 10 minutes of steaming, or 2 to 3 garments per fill.

Please note: If you use tap water, we recommend descaling the steamer at least once every six months. Limescale builds up in the reservoir and steam head and can reduce steam output. Find out more in our descaling guide.

Step 2 — Get started

Plug it into the power outlet. The steamer is ready to use in 20 to 25 seconds — no long waits, no hassle.

Using the steamer for the first time? Test it on an old towel or piece of fabric first. New steamers may sometimes leave behind a little dry powder residue from the manufacturing process - this is not limescale - it is powder residue from the anti-limescale coating. It will disappear after the first use.

Is the indicator light changing from green to orange? Don't worry — this is normal. Your steamer is generating more steam. Just keep steaming.

Step 3 — Hang up your garment or lay it flat

Hang your garment on a clothes hanger, then hang it from a clothes rack, door handle, door frame, shower rack, etc.

Would you rather steam horizontally? Lay your garment flat on a towel on a table, bed, sofa, etc. The STEAMRS Garment Steamer works both vertically and horizontally — handy for trousers, cuffs, and collars.

Step 4 — Start steaming

Press the steam head against the fabric and move it slowly over the garment. Pull the fabric slightly taut with your other hand — this removes creases faster and more thoroughly.

The steam is hot (100°C). Use the included heat-resistant storage bag as a glove on your free hand. This lets you steam safely without the risk of burns.

The four best steaming techniques

Steaming isn’t difficult, but the right technique makes a big difference. These are the four methods we use:

Technique 1 — Steaming from the outside

The most commonly used technique. Works for most garments.

Press the steam head against the outside of the fabric and move it slowly downward. Hold the fabric taut with your free hand.

Ideal for:

  • The front of a blouse, shirt, or jacket
  • Sleeves
  • Skirts and dresses

Technique 2 — Steaming from the inside

The professional technique. This is how they do it in fashion shops and studios.
Place the steamer inside the garment, with the steam head facing you, and steam from the inside. You’ll see the creases disappear instantly.

Ideal for:

  • The back of a blouse or shirt
  • Buttons and buttonholes
  • Seams and details
  • Hard-to-reach creases

Technique 3 — Steaming with the steam glove

For a crisp, pressed result. Almost like ironing, but gentler on the fabric.

Wear the heat-resistant steam glove on your free hand. Hold the fabric taut from the inside while steaming from the outside. The pressure of your hand through the fabric gives you a crisp, pressed result.

Ideal for:

  • Shirt collars and cuffs
  • Button plackets
  • Pockets and edges
  • Anywhere you want a sharp, pressed result

Technique 4 — Horizontal steaming for a pressed effect

For an ironed effect without an iron.

Lay your garment flat on a towel on a table, bed, sofa, or chair. Press the steam head against the fabric and move it as you would an iron.

Ideal for:

  • Trousers with a sharp crease
  • Sleeves with a pressed crease
  • Shirt collars
  • Anywhere you want an extra-flat, crisp result.

Ready to get started?

Steaming is a habit you quickly get into. After the first time, you’ll never want to go back to an iron.
